This Masters degree is aimed at graduates who want to use creative practice to design, investigate and interpret urban places.
The module includes:
• a survey of the range of organisations which manage, curate, interpret and care for places and environments;
• analysis of the agendas, frameworks (legal and conceptual), pressures and priorities which influence the interpretation and /stewardship of place in practice;
• identification of, and careful study of, a selection of organisations with responsibility for the stewardship of place, in order to develop a core body of precedents;
• visits to organisations with responsibility for the stewardship of place (approximately 3 per semester – 6 in total);
• talks and presentations from practitioners;
• comparative analysis and critique of different practitioners and their methods/priorities, ethics and contexts;
• presentation and recording skills, enabling students to convey their analysis verbally, visually and through the compilation of a log-book.

Praxis
The module explores methods and techniques of managing, interpreting and curating places through the study of organisations/custodians as diverse as land owners, property developers and agents, designers, cultural institutions and planning authorities. These organisations are considered within the context of present practice, while considering how such practice might develop into the future.
